Another degree

Telescope
Georgetown College, the arts and sciences college of Georgetown University, has announced their commencement speakers this year. It includes one current and one former US cabinet member; an Ivy League dean; a couple of heavy hitter CEOs; a couple of foundation presidents. And a Vatican astronomer.

With it, comes an honorary doctorate in humane letters. Already a friend has asked if one can get a degree in inhumane letters – I know a few people who would qualify for that!

I am flattered and bemused. Mostly I am thrilled to get the chance to visit DC and meet my youngest goddaughter, whom I have yet to see in the flesh...

Indeed.

Do we know who is responsible for updating my Wikipedia page? I have always wanted someone to get rid of that old photograph... we moved out of that lab five years ago, and I have dropped 20 pounds since it was taken...

What photo would you like there?

I put that one up back when I took it; I'm amazed no one has changed it in all these years. Then again, for all I know, people might have toggled it in/out over the years.

I have sent to your gt address a link to my Dropbox, with more recent photos. Take your pick!

My oldest (whose godfather also lives in Rome) was very excited by the news of the Vatican astronomer! He will be part of the choral music for this fest (last year he sang for seven different Georgetown commencement ceremonies, and then wrote a generic Jesuit University commencement speech based on all the speeches he heard). Enjoy!

No pressure on me to come up with something original...

Actually, in preparing my remarks I had a couple of very clever ideas... which I then googled, to confirm that, indeed, I was not the first one (by a long shot) to have all that cleverness occur to me while preparing a commencement address. Out they go!

They weren't all that clever, anyway.

Perhaps Guy could start with the generic speech? Hmm, I suppose a MadLibs speech might not go over so well with the administration (the kids might love it, though).

I want to know where to study inhumane letters.

You don't know me, but in the strange and unlikely circumstance that the Jesuits that run Georgetown don't put you up, I'm in Annandale Virginia and I have a guest room that you're welcome to.

Thank you! Of course, you're right... joining the Jesuits means joining the world's largest chain of cheap/free hotels. I have a room with the Jesuit community on campus. Georgetown is doing very well by me; they're even sending a car to pick me up at the airport!
