Marshfield, part two

Thanks for all the prayers and well-wishes. My sister-in-law's surgery went well, and she's pretty much in as good a condition as one could hope given the nature of her illness, a rare variant of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST).

Ground Control to Cardinal Tom...

So, the Pope is scheduled to speak with two Italian astronauts in the space station on Saturday; should be a fun moment. Our local contact on Vatican radio just did an interview with me over the phone, in English and again in Italian. I hope I said what I thought I was saying.

In the process I realized that I had actually met one of the astronauts, Roberto Vittori. We were on a TV show together for the Italian Bishop's cable network SAT 2000 back in 2006. Really nice guy, as I recall; over the while working with NASA he'd lived in Clear Lake near the Johnson Space Center, so we knew a few folks in common.

(The show in 2006 was about aliens, of course; all the typical questions, etc. They had told me I would be on with "an Italian who has been in outer space" and I had been afraid it was going to be some alien abductee. I was relieved to discover it was an actual astronaut.)
