There's no place like Rome...

Several friends on LJ have collected all the places they've spent away from home this past year. It's a fun way to remember back to vacations and visits to friends.

For someone like me, though, who can't think of what place counts as "home", this provides a challenge. I did count up 37 different locations (many of them visited more than once) where I have been overnight away from the Observatory... 142 days gone, altogether. (Not counting the days spent in Tucson, which technically is my legal residence, and home to my doctor and dentist.)

Actually, I did considerably less travel in 2011 than in recent years. My airline tells me I flew a mere 60,000 or so air miles this year, about half of what I did last year. (Two trips to Australia in 2010 will do that to you.) No Executive Platinum privileges for me next year... I will see if I miss them. Still, I think there's an optimal number of days that one should spend on the road, and I have probably exceeded that number again this year.

My most-visited city (in terms of number of visits and total number of days) this past year was London; the place where I spent the most number of consecutive days was Liverpool. A close third was staying with my parents in Florida.

Plans for next year include scientific conferences in Japan, Australia, and China. Plus Capricon, Boskone, and Chicon. Hope to see some of you there!
