Happy Thanksgiving, Roman style

Thanks to the miracle of times zones and the internet, I was awakened this afternoon (sleeping off today's meal, one hour for each helping) by a friend in the US calling me over FaceTime to wish me a happy Thanksgiving.

There are only two Americans resident in our community at the moment, and when the cook announced she was going to make us a big Thanksgiving turkey today the other American felt embarrassed. "Why should we force an American holiday on everyone else?" he asked. The rest of us shouted him down. I opined that I wouldn't mind also celebrating Polish and Argentinean holidays (along with the regular Italian ones, of course).

Gina did herself proud:

Incidentally (my sister asked) the white gizmo behind her on the counter is the base of her Bimby machine (sometimes called a Thermomix). The link is from five years ago, they're more common around here nowadays.

Anyway, it smelled like turkey and tasted like turkey, even after the third helping. She made stuffing, too, with chestnuts. Mashed potatoes and string beans and corn (she asked me what contorni goes with Thanksgiving). Italian wines, of course. And a chocolate torte for dessert.

The only odd thing was that she baked the turkey with several large pieces of bacon pinned to the outside. I had never seen that before. But I didn't complain, because she was so delighted to cook American-style and besides... bacon. You know.
